We had the pleasure of hosting the talented author and science teacher, Ann Dale, for a truly enchanting day at our bookstore. Ann, known for her passion for making science accessible and exciting for young learners, brought her expertise and creativity to life in a Harry Potter-themed science activity for children.
A Spellbinding Introduction to Science
Ann Dale has recently published a remarkable book designed to help Key Stage 2 pupils grasp abstract scientific concepts with ease and enjoyment. Drawing on her experience as a science teacher, Ann’s book combines clear explanations with engaging activities, making it a must-have resource for young science enthusiasts and their parents or teachers.
But Ann didn't stop at introducing her book. She brought science to life through a hands-on, magical experience inspired by the wizarding world of Harry Potter!
The Magic of Learning: Science Meets Wizardry
The activity, aimed at young children, transformed our bookstore into a bustling Hogwarts-style classroom, complete with bubbling potions and mysterious experiments. The young “wizards” in attendance delved into:
- Acids and Bases: Mixing colourful solutions to discover the magic of pH changes, with potions that changed hues as if by spell.
- Static Electricity: Experimenting with charged balloons that made objects dance, much to the delight of the budding scientists.
- Chemical Reactions: Watching the mesmerising "carbon snake" demo, where a simple reaction created a writhing, ash-like structure that looked just like a magical creature emerging from the potion.
The children were not only captivated by the activities but also learned valuable scientific principles in the process. Ann’s ability to link the fun of Harry Potter to real-world science made complex ideas relatable and memorable.
A Magical Atmosphere
The event was filled with laughter, curiosity, and the occasional gasp of amazement as experiments unfolded before eager eyes. Parents and caregivers were thrilled to see their children so engaged, with many commenting on how much their little ones were learning without even realising it.
